    Is Independence Inalienable?

    Declaration of Independence We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Inalienable rights? Or unalienable rights? Which word is right? Er, correct? This word vulture worries about such distinctions. Or is it potato, po-tot-o? Maybe Gershwin was right. “Let’s call the whole thing off.” Only today is the 4th of July, the day our nation celebrates its freedom from the monarchy that historically claimed rule over every piece of real estate it could, subjugating peoples everywhere.     Celebrating the 4th of July in Cuchara, CO

    Bob Goff (Love Does) says it’s better to be in a parade than to watch one. And I agree. The best memories are made by participation instead of observation. Better to be a participant than a spectator. Displays of patriotism are alive and well here in southeastern Colorado where each year either people come for the first time or else return to watch or participate in the annual 4th of July parade in Cuchara. This year, part of my family rode in our Jeep, which grandkids helped me decorate. From the Jeep, they threw candy to parade watchers who lined the streets.
